Eye health, the foods to focus on

Eye health is very important because it is one of the most important organs of the human body. Drinking enough water, eating fruits and vegetables are habits that we know and practice every day. But what about the foods to favor to maintain the sight and preserve our eye health?

Focus on foods rich in lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C

Lutein and zeaxanthin are pigments that give food their color. It was revealed that the latter would have significant effects on sight. They slow the progression of certain ocular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration or cataract and also filter blue light. The benefits of vitamin C are well known, it slows the progression of cataracts, AMD and loss of visual acuity. So eat oranges and green vegetables like kale or spinach.

Vitamin A and beta-carotene

Foods rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene are orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots and spinach. These help the functioning of the retina, help the adaptation of the eye in darkness. Studies have also shown that foods rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene reduce the risk of contracting age-related visual diseases.

Zinc and Omega 3

Zinc is a key factor for the production of melanin, important for eye protection. On the other hand, if you suffer from omega 3 deficiency, you also risk suffering from visual diseases such as dry eye or AMD. Foods rich in zinc are red meat (beef, veal, game), chicken, oysters, wheat germ or sesame seeds.
Consuming these foods as often as possible promises good visual health. Moreover, if you want to have the opinion of a professional on the health of your eyes, go to one of our branches, in Rose Hill, Triolet, Beau Bassin and soon in Port Louis.
